Sherlock

1 Does the episode follow a 3-act structure and/ or classical Hollywood narrative.

The episode starts of with everything going well, using Todorov’s narrative we can recognise that after  sherlock and his sidekick are a regular job working on a intrusion, they make a discovery that someone was murdered, breaking the equilibrium and forcing the protagonist to peruse fixing the problem to return thing back to normal, Sherlocks sidekick and date are captured eventually after sherlock finds out more about the crime syndicate their up against and sherlock proceeds to rescue them and save the day, returning the story back to the equilibrium that the characters think is ok, this is proleptic dramatic irony because we know that it’s not over and is left on a cliff-hanger, the structure reinforces Todorov’s narrative, however it’s not conventional and is non linear

2 How does binary opposition apply itself.

Binary opposition applies itself because of the good vs evil story there is sherlock, who represents authority and the law, vs the foreign, evil Chinese women, who’s part of an ancient crime syndicate.  Which brings culture into it, and may change how we view certain groups, linking to cultivation, throughout the episode because of consistent repetition of how groups are portrayed

3 Can Propps character types be applied.

Propps character theory can be applied here because we have character types like the protagonist(sherlock) , the antagonist(the Chinese woman), the sidekick(martin freeman’s character), the damsel in distress(the sidekicks date) the mission giver(the banker), they all shape the plot in order to carry the story and the structure of the episode

4 Who are the 5 main characters.

The 5 main characters are sherlock who is male, around 30 and is the protagonist, Dr Watson who is also male, is the sidekick and is around 40, Sarah, Mrs Hudson, and the banker

John Watson is troubled by the past

Dr. Watson can't write anything on his blog. He continuously has bad dreams, and he visits a psychiatrist who does think that he's improving.

Multiple cases of suicide happened

Several suicides happened using the same poison. The police hold a conference headed by Lestrade and all the reporters get the same message, 'Wrong', from S.H.

John is looking for a roommate.

John meets a friend in the park by coincidence and tells him that he's looking for a roommate. To his surprise, his friend heard that before the same morning.

Ms. Hudson meets Watson

Ms. Hudson meets John Watson who is checking the apartment, and she tells Sherlock about the suicides which he seemed very optimistic about. He said that there were four not three, just when the door rings and the police asked Sherlock to join the investigation.

Sherlock asks John to help him.

Sherlock asks John if he was a good doctor and when the latter replies, he asks him if he'd join him in the investigation, which clearly makes John very excited.
